Megan Olivi’s Surprising Reaction as Alexandre Pantoja Ties UFC Flyweight Record with Husband Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson
Megan Olivi Reacts to Alexandre Pantoja Matching UFC Flyweight Record Held by Husband Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson
UFC analyst and interviewer Megan Olivi recently shared her reaction to Alexandre Pantoja tying the UFC flyweight record for most victories with her husband, Joseph Benavidez, and MMA legend Demetrious Johnson. Olivi was clearly thrilled to see her husband’s name still etched in the UFC record books, even after his retirement from active competition.
Pantoja achieved this milestone after successfully defending his flyweight title for the third time at UFC 310, defeating UFC newcomer Kai Asakura. The Brazilian showcased his remarkable grappling and striking skills throughout the fight, with Asakura briefly hurting him in the first round with a flying knee. However, Pantoja quickly regained control, landing several significant strikes and securing his dominant position.
In the second round, Pantoja executed his signature back mount and swiftly transitioned to a rear-naked choke, submitting Asakura and cementing his third consecutive title defense. With this victory, Pantoja tied the UFC record for most flyweight wins, sharing the honor with Benavidez and Johnson, each with 13 victories in the division.
Megan Olivi took to Instagram to express her pride, commenting with an affectionate “❤️ Joeyyyyyyy” on the post by ESPN MMA that announced Pantoja’s achievement. This comment reflected her happiness in seeing her husband’s legacy live on even after his retirement over three years ago.
While Pantoja celebrated his win, he also took the opportunity to challenge Demetrious Johnson’s legacy as the greatest flyweight in UFC history. During his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Pantoja not only praised Johnson but also declared himself the new greatest of all time, expressing his desire to face Johnson in the future.
However, Johnson, who officially retired from MMA in September 2023 after a legendary career, has no plans to come out of retirement. In a recent YouTube video, Johnson explained that he was content with his life outside of fighting, stating, “I’m not the best flyweight in the world anymore, and I’m happily retired.” He emphasized that his decision to retire was driven by his desire to focus on his ventures and build his business empire, rather than relying on his fighting career for income.
Johnson, who holds the record for 11 consecutive flyweight title defenses in the UFC, also clarified that he had no interest in returning to the octagon, comparing himself to fighters like José Aldo and Donald Cerrone, who returned to fighting after retirement. For Johnson, the future lies in his post-fight ventures, and he remains supportive of Pantoja’s success, without any intentions to reignite his own MMA career.
